Temptation and Revealed Preference

چکیده
Gul and Pesendorfer [9] model the static behavior of an agent who ranks menus prior to the experience of temptation. This paper models the dynamic behavior of an agent whose ranking of menus itself is subject to temptation. The representation for the agents dynamically inconsistent choice behavior views him as possessing a dynamically consistent view of what choices he shouldmake (a normative preference) and being tempted by menus that contain tempting alternatives. Foundations for the model require a departure from Gul and Pesendorfers idea that temptation creates a preference for commitment. Instead, it is hypothesized that distancing an agent from the consequences of his choices separates normative preference and temptation. Temptation, Welfare and Revealed Preference∗
Choice may be determined both by a consideration of one’s welfare (normative preference) and by desires (temptation preference). To provide foundations for such a theory, Gul and Pesendorfer [10, 11] adopt a preference over choice problems as a primitive and hypothesize that temptation creates a preference for commitment. This paper argues that temptation may in fact create the absence of a pre...
متن کاملCommitment and self-control
The literature on self-control problems has typically concentrated on immediate temptations. This paper studies a Gul and Pesendorfer [13, 14] style model in which decision-makers are a¤ected by temptations that lie in the future. While temptation is commonly understood to give rise to a demand for commitment, it is shown that temptation by future consumptioncan induce its absence. The model ...
متن کاملChoice and Normative Preference
Due to factors such as temptation, choices may not respect normative preference (the agents own, subjective view of what constitutes his welfare). Nevertheless, the evidence on preference reversals suggests a means of recovering normative preference from choice. A de nition of normative preference in terms of choices between su¢ ciently delayed alternatives is formulated and studied. Mild cond...

متن کاملTemptation and Social Preference∗
This paper shows in an experiment that giving rates in a dictator game increase significantly if payments are offered with delay. We hypothesize that a temptation to be selfish may be at play in social preferences. We model this and demonstrate that our model is consistent with much of the existing evidence on dictator games as well. The possible relationship with other social preference theori...
